About the Journal Tanzania Zamani journal is the official publication of the History Department, University of Dar es Salaam and the Historical Association of Tanzania (HAT). The journal promotes historical thinking through research and writing on Tanzania. In particular, we are interested in articles that invoke African agency in African history and challenge conventional colonial and postcolonial assumptions. Tanzania Zamani is registered in EBSCO database and has an international editorial board. In 2018 it emerged the best journal in the College of Humanities, University of Dar es Salaam. It was also awarded a certificate of excellence by the University of Dar es Salaam during the annual research week in 2018.
Guidelines for Authors Tanzania Zamani is a biennial journal published by the Department of History, University of Dar es Salaam, and the Historical Association of Tanzania. It publishes scholarly articles and book reviews on all aspects of Tanzania’s past provided they are presented in historical genre and follow the generally agreed rules for scholarly writing. Submissions intended for publication in Tanzania Zamani should be in English; either British or American convention, as long as consistence is maintained. They should start with an abstract not exceeding 250 words. The main text should have a maximum of 7,500 words (excluding notes) and should be double-spaced, font type Times New Roman, and font size 12 throughout. Book reviews should not exceed 1,000 words. Contributors should submit electronic copies formatted in MS Word. Illustrations such as maps, diagrams and photographs should bear indications of their respective sources and evidence of copyright permission where applicable. Captions should be short and clear, and should bear necessary marks of historicity, including the relevant date(s). Quotations of more than thirty words should begin on a new line, indented from the left-hand margin. Italics should be used only for the names of publications and for words in languages other than English. Footnotes rather than endnotes or parenthetical citations should be used. They should be numbered continuously throughout the manuscript, as opposed to starting a new sequence on each page. Citations should be made only in the footnotes and not in the main text, and there should be no separate bibliography. Citations and referencing should adhere to the rules and principles recommended in Kate Turabian’s A Manual for Writers (8th edition) or Chicago Manual for Writers (16th edition). Upon receipt of a contribution, the editors will assess its relevance to the journal and, based on positive assessment, submit it to at least two reviewers. The peer review process is double blind, and reviewers’ comments will be used in determining the acceptability or rejection of the given work for publication. Submissions may be accepted for publication subject to necessary reviews recommended by reviewers. After an article has been accepted for publication, and typesetting completed, page proofs will be sent to respective contributors. Corrections must be kept to a minimum and should not include new material. Authors will receive one free copy of the respective issue of the journal.
